Drive less, save big. Pay-per-mile insurance is an affordable insurance for low-mileage drivers. If you aren't driving much, you shouldn't be paying much. Some insurance products are underwritten by insurers in the National General Insurance Group. Other insurance products are underwritten by Metromile Insurance Company.

As catalogued
Pay-per-mile car insurance for low-mileage drivers priced from OBD-II dongle mileage data, sold digitally; from 2016 underwritten by its own carrier.
2026 reality
Metromile is owned by Lemonade, which closed the all-stock acquisition on 2022-07-28 and gained an insurance entity with 49 state licences, over USD 110m of car premium and data from 500m car trips. Consumer guides (NerdWallet, December 2025; Insurify) report that the Metromile brand no longer sells new policies and that pay-per-mile cover is offered under the Lemonade brand in select states. metromile.com returned HTTP 403 on 2026-10-17.
Went public in February 2021 via a reverse (SPAC-style) merger, then was acquired by Lemonade in 2022; its carrier, licences and telematics data were folded into Lemonade's car insurance line, about 60 staff (roughly 20%) were laid off, and the pay-per-mile product is now sold as a Lemonade Car option.
Metromile lacked scale and capital as a listed company; Lemonade bought licences, car premium and driving data to accelerate its own car product.
pay-per-mile pricing remains a reference model for usage-based motor insurance, but now as a capability inside Lemonade rather than an independent insurer.
