Unfortunately, donation-based-crowdfunding for a serious illness, injury or significant loss of property by itself is unlikely meet the gap. The Crowdfunding Crisis Club (CCC) puts the odds back in your favour.
What became of it

As catalogued
A New Zealand peer-to-peer alternative to insurance for crisis events: members of a 'Crowdfunding Crisis Club' automatically top up each other's crowdfunding campaigns after a serious illness, injury or property loss. It grew out of founder Chris Logan's earlier PeerCover scheme in which peer groups pooled money to pay each other's insurance excess.
2026 reality
peercover.co.nz is still online under PeerCover Limited and describes the top-up scheme (one-off NZD 20 subscription plus NZD 1 per year; small automatic donations per member to a member's campaign), but shows only '6 so far' members and no active campaigns, and its blog carries unrelated posts (e.g. on sportsbooks, dated September 2026). The scheme appears dormant.
PeerCover began around 2015 as a peer-to-peer insurance-excess pooling service in which PeerCover managed the escrow and recommended claim payments; by February 2016 Logan described it as a hard sell with limited success and launched Halerhealth, a direct health-cover product sold on behalf of dentists. The crowdfunding top-up club is the later form of PeerCover catalogued here.
according to the founder, the excess-pooling idea attracted interest internationally but little take-up; the crowdfunding top-up model avoided insurance regulation and pooling mechanics but also failed to attract members.
a curiosity among P2P and mutual-aid experiments; with six members it has no market relevance in 2026.

REVIEW · Re-fetched peercover.co.nz (still shows '6 so far' members, no campaigns, unrelated 2025-2026 blog posts) and verified the February 2016 Good Returns article; normalised its URL from a 'test.' subdomain. Activity remains unverifiable, so REVIEWED with low confidence.
