As catalogued
Berlin-based digital full-stack insurer with its own BaFin licence, selling simple, flexible, app-based personal lines (household contents, liability, pet) directly to consumers with fully digital administration and claims.
2026 reality
Coya no longer exists as a brand or stand-alone insurer. Luko acquired it in January 2022 and renamed it Luko Insurance AG, the group's licensed risk carrier. In 2023 its German portfolio of about 50,000 liability, pet-health and contents contracts was sold to Getsafe (BaFin approval end of September 2023); after Luko entered receivership, a French court selected Allianz Direct in January 2024 to buy Luko's French home-insurance business, which Luko Insurance AG had underwritten.
Changed from an independent German direct insurer into the licence vehicle of French insurtech Luko, used to passport Luko's offer across Europe. Luko's financial collapse led to the break-up of the group: German customers went to Getsafe and the French business to Allianz Direct. The fate of the Luko Insurance AG legal entity and its licence after these sales is not documented in the sources found.
Coya's licence was more valuable to a scaling neighbour than its own sub-scale German book; once Luko ran out of cash, the portfolio was sold to a peer.
of historical interest as one of the first German insurtechs to obtain a full insurance licence, and as a cautionary case of full-stack insurtech consolidation.
Third taxonomy
