Innovation intelligence brief
Innovation intelligence brief
Added by the 2026 Swiss InsurTech research (issue #41) from public sources, not by the original academic study (Stoeckli, Dremel & Uebernickel). Its 2016 and 2017 classifications apply the original taxonomy definitions but were not validated by that study. All innovations in this cohort · Methodology ↗
Zurich start-up insuring buyers and projects of carbon credits against delivery shortfalls and reversals (e.g. fire, wind, drought), paying claims in kind with replacement carbon credits held on its own balance sheet.
Research profile · Swiss Innovation · 2021–2026
Classification notes · Legacy role 'risk-carrier' reflects the intended model. Market positioning is left empty: the 'insurer' code requires a licensed carrier, and no FINMA licence grant was found (LinkedIn, October 2026: licence application ongoing). How policies are written or fronted before licensing (e.g. the October 2026 placement the company reports) is not established. Technology left empty because no core technology is evidenced. Maturity 'experimental': first placement only reported in October 2026.

At launch
An insurer whose balance sheet consists of high-quality carbon credits, paying shortfall and reversal claims in kind with replacement credits.
2026 reality
In July 2026 Verra approved CarbonPool's reversal insurance policy (alongside one from Kita) as meeting its Durability Pilot insurance criteria, so participating projects can use it as an alternative to the pooled buffer account. No FINMA licence grant was found: CarbonPool's LinkedIn profile (October 2026) still says it is in the licence application process for a Swiss regulated (re)insurance licence and offers pre-underwriting quotes; according to a company post it completed a first placement under the Verra pilot in October 2026.
The original model remains substantially intact; in December 2024 a dedicated insurance subsidiary, CarbonPool Insurance AG, was registered in Zurich ahead of licensing.
one of very few carriers built specifically for voluntary carbon market risk; Verra's approval gives it a regulatory-grade use case as an alternative to buffer pools, but scale depends on obtaining the FINMA licence.
Third taxonomy
REVIEW · Licence status checked: Zefix shows CarbonPool Holding AG (Zurich, statutes 20 April 2023) and a separate CarbonPool Insurance AG (registered 13 December 2024, non-life insurance purpose, board change July 2026); no FINMA licence grant found, and the company's LinkedIn page (Oct 2026) still says the application is in process. Added the two Zefix entries and LinkedIn as sources; launch date refined from '2023' to 2023-04 (register entry). Removed 'insurer' from market positioning because the code requires a licensed carrier. carbonpool.com did not load (TLS/403) when checked. The UNFCCC PDF downloads but its text could not be extracted; its licence statement (dated 3 February 2025) is confirmed via the search-engine extract only.
