Innovation intelligence brief
Innovation intelligence brief
Added by the 2026 Swiss InsurTech research (issue #41) from public sources, not by the original academic study (Stoeckli, Dremel & Uebernickel). Its 2016 and 2017 classifications apply the original taxonomy definitions but were not validated by that study. All innovations in this cohort · Methodology ↗
Partnership in which Swiss Re provides risk management expertise and insurance products for Baidu's autonomous driving business, starting with what the partners called the industry's first insurance solution for Apollo Valet Parking (AVP), Baidu Apollo's automated valet parking product, and a research programme to quantify how automated vehicles' risk differs from human-driven ones (later also intelligent cockpits and robotaxis).
Research profile · Swiss Innovation · 2021–2026
Classification notes · Narrowed to one concrete innovation: the Swiss Re–Baidu autonomous driving insurance partnership and its first product (AVP cover, Nov 2021). The Waymo safety studies are a separate research collaboration and are recorded only as context milestones, not as part of the innovation's evolution. Strategic evolution and maturity 'unclear' because no post-2021 evidence on the Baidu product exists; relevance 'limited' for the same reason. Swiss connection is the Swiss reinsurer; the product targets China.

At launch
Industry-first insurance solution for an automated valet parking product (Baidu Apollo AVP) combined with joint research to quantify automated-vehicle risk.
2026 reality
No public evidence after the November 2021 announcement was found on the AVP cover or on follow-on Baidu robotaxi insurance products. Swiss Re continues autonomous-vehicle risk work in a separate collaboration with Waymo in the US (joint claims-based safety studies, December 2023 and December 2024: 25.3m driverless miles with 88% fewer property damage and 92% fewer bodily injury claims than Swiss Re's human-driver baselines).
Unclear for the Baidu partnership. The separate Waymo research collaboration shows Swiss Re's continued AV risk benchmarking but is not an evolution of this product.
an early example of a reinsurer co-developing cover for a specific autonomous driving function; Swiss Re's large human-driver claims baseline (used in the Waymo studies) makes it a reference partner for AV risk, but the Baidu product itself has little public traction evidence.
Third taxonomy
REVIEW · Narrowed the record from a collection of Swiss Re AV activities to one concrete innovation (Swiss Re–Baidu AV insurance, AVP cover, Nov 2021); renamed accordingly (key unchanged). Dropped the Swiss Re press release source (HTTP 403) and added Global Fleet. Removed the unsupported '3.8m miles / 76%' figures (not in the cited ASU source). Reclassified: strategic evolution 'unclear' (was 'expanded' based on Waymo, a separate collaboration), shift emptied, maturity 'unclear', relevance 'limited', business model 'risk-transfer' only, added 'risk-capital' to value chain. REVIEWED: no evidence of the product after the announcement.
