Heidelberg-based app-first digital insurance manager: consumers could manage all their existing insurance policies in one app, with Getsafe earning broker commissions.
2026 reality
Getsafe (Heidelberg) operates as a digital MGA for younger consumers, selling app-based property, liability, life and health products in Germany, France and Austria. In mid-2025 it announced it would return the BaFin insurance licence obtained in 2021, move existing contracts to partner insurers and rely fully on its MGA platform; it reported brokering over EUR 500 million of premium volume, mainly in life and health. A June 2026 comparison-site report says it has also withdrawn from the UK, with UK policies transferred to Urban Jungle.
Sold its digital broker/policy-management unit to Verivox (2018) and became a digital MGA writing its own products with partner carriers; iptiQ (Swiss Re) led a US$30m Series B in December 2020, and BaFin granted a property and accident insurance licence in October 2021. In 2025 it announced the return of that licence to operate again as a pure MGA, and it reportedly exited the UK, which it entered in January 2020.
the founder described the broker unit as profitable but hard to scale; owning the product let Getsafe capture underwriting economics and control the customer experience. According to the founder, the own licence later no longer provided a competitive advantage, so it reverted to a capital-light MGA model.
one of the leading German digital insurers for younger customers, now positioned as a tech-driven MGA platform rather than a balance-sheet carrier; the original multi-policy management app concept no longer exists.
Third taxonomy
REVIEW · Major correction: the draft described Getsafe as a licensed insurer, but DAS Investment (citing Handelsblatt, updated 2025-07-29) and Versicherungsbote report it is returning its BaFin licence to operate as a pure MGA. Positioning changed insurer to mga, risk-transfer removed, shed-risk/line-expansion/ai-enhanced added, licence dated 2021-10, and the UK-exit milestone re-dated to the June 2026 report because the exit date itself is unknown.
