Provide customers with a better insurance comparison experience
What became of it
Completed · High confidence · Last verified 2026-10-17
As catalogued
Google's own comparison service for auto insurance and other financial products (US and UK), free for consumers and paid through commissions and fees from participating carriers; it signalled a possible big-tech entry into insurance distribution.
2026 reality
Google Compare no longer exists. Google announced in February 2016 that it would shut the service in the US and UK, with operations ending by 23 March 2016.
In an email to partners Google said the service 'hasn't driven the success we hoped for' and that it would focus on AdWords (search advertising) for financial services. Trade press reported that Compare had launched auto insurance in only a few US states, and industry commentators said it conflicted with Google's pay-per-click model; the exit also covered credit cards, banking and mortgage comparison.
limited rollout and traction, plus a conflict with Google's own search-advertising revenue from insurers, made the comparison business less attractive than selling advertising, as commentators quoted by Carrier Management suggested.
no longer active; Google Compare is the reference case of a big-tech company trying, and quickly abandoning, direct insurance distribution in favour of selling advertising to insurers.

REVIEW · Verified the shutdown via Carrier Management and Search Engine Land (partner email of 2016-02-23; US/UK closure on 2016-03-23). Removed the unverified claim that State Farm, Geico, Allstate and Progressive never participated, replaced it with Carrier Management's reported reasons, and added the Search Engine Land source.
