What became of it

As catalogued
A Zurich-founded (2013) mobile-first digital insurance manager, also active in Germany. Users aggregated and analysed all their policies in one app, and Knip acted as a digital broker to switch them to better tariffs.
2026 reality
The Knip app and brokerage no longer exist. In November 2019 Knip withdrew from Switzerland, ending its brokerage activities by the end of that month and largely deactivating its app. knip.ch now hosts an unrelated WordPress blog and knip.de an unrelated insurance magazine.
In mid-2017 Knip merged with the Dutch comparison-software company Komparu to form The Digital Insurance Group (DIG), headquartered in Amsterdam, with Ingo Weber as CEO; co-founder Dennis Just left. DIG positioned itself as a B2B technology partner to insurers, banks and brokers and raised EUR 15m in June 2018 in a round co-led by Zurich Insurance and Finch Capital, alongside a multi-year Zurich collaboration. In November 2019 the Knip consumer brokerage and app were shut down in Switzerland.
according to Finanz und Wirtschaft (via Netzwoche), Knip never became self-sustaining; several insurers refused it access to customer files and app downloads stayed low. The group's emphasis moved to selling Komparu-based software to insurers.
Knip was one of the first-generation European digital insurance managers alongside Clark and wefox. Its closure illustrates the dependency of broker-mandate apps on incumbent cooperation; the category later consolidated into a few players.
