What became of it

As catalogued
Cloud 'operating system' for SMB employee benefits: enrolment in medical, dental, vision, life and disability, integrated with carriers, payroll and TPAs.
2026 reality
Maxwell Health was acquired by Sun Life in June 2018 and launched a combined Sun Life/Maxwell digital benefits platform in 2019. The platform remains in use under the Maxwell Health name: maxwellhealth.com now redirects to a Sun Life microsite, and an employer (Wilkes University) ran its 2025 open enrollment through it.
Moved from VC-backed independent (USD 56.4m raised, Sun Life among investors) to a Sun Life-owned benefits technology unit; the platform was combined with Sun Life's group benefits offering but continues as a Maxwell-branded enrolment and benefits-administration platform for small and mid-sized employers.
Sun Life used Maxwell to give small and mid-sized employers a full digital benefits and enrolment offering tied to its group products.
illustrates the carrier-acquires-benefits-platform pattern; Maxwell now functions mainly as Sun Life's digital enrolment and distribution tool for SMB employers.
Third taxonomy
REVIEW · Verified the 2018 Sun Life acquisition and 2019 combined platform (Sun Life releases; corrected the 2019 release URL). Found maxwellhealth.com now 301-redirects to a Sun Life microsite and a 2025 employer enrollment on the platform, so changed strategic-evolution from 'absorbed' to 'retained' and maturity from 'integrated' to 'established'.
