Innovation intelligence brief
Abracar takes care of the initial – perceived by many sellers as very complicated – steps for the private car vendor (e.g. providing quality listings, taking photos, facilitating buyer selection), making car selling as effortless as possible for them. Additionally, abracar’s approach increases transparency of information and trust in the used car market for buyers by having each car checked by independent car experts from known organization such as TÜV as well as by providing a free 60-day-warranty to every car buyer.

As catalogued
Allianz X-incubated peer-to-peer used-car selling service that handled listings, photos, independent (e.g. TUV) inspection and buyer selection for private sellers, bundled with a free 60-day warranty; an insurer's attempt to own a car-purchase touchpoint rather than an insurance product.
2026 reality
Abracar no longer operates. Allianz X announced in April 2020 that operations would end on 31 May 2020, with liquidation expected by spring 2021; the abracar.de domain no longer serves the platform.
Incubated by Allianz X in 2016, spun out as Allianz X's first spin-off in February 2017, funded with EUR 11.5m in June 2018 for expansion into France and Austria, then wound down by Allianz and liquidated.
Allianz X stated that Abracar's strategic and economic contribution to Allianz's core business was limited; according to reporting, a planned entry of a strategic investor failed before the Covid-19 shock to car sales.
an example of an incumbent insurer building a non-insurance ecosystem business around a purchase moment; the exit illustrates the difficulty of monetising such adjacencies for the core insurance business.
