As catalogued
Free primary liability insurance (up to $1M) automatically included for Airbnb hosts on every booking. It was an early embedded insurance product of the home-sharing platform economy.
2026 reality
AirCover for Hosts is free and included automatically. It bundles $1M host liability insurance, up to $3M damage protection (a platform reimbursement program, not insurance), guest identity verification, reservation screening against party and damage risk, and a 24-hour safety line.
On 2021-11-09 Airbnb replaced Host Protection Insurance and the Host Guarantee with AirCover for Hosts, initially with $1M damage protection plus pet damage, deep cleaning and income-loss cover. Damage protection was later tripled to $3M (reported by 2023), and guest identity verification, reservation screening and a 24-hour safety line were added. The liability insurance component continues at $1M.
Bundling insurance with screening and service features under one consumer-facing brand lets Airbnb market trust as a platform feature and differentiate itself from other rental platforms.
A reference case of free, platform-funded embedded cover. Its non-insurance damage reimbursement layer is frequently criticised as not replacing commercial host insurance.

REVIEW · Verified the AirCover page and the 2021-11-09 launch via Airbnb's Winter Release post. Corrected the claim that damage protection was raised to $3M at launch: it launched at $1M and was later tripled to $3M; added two sources.
