Etherisc develops a protocol for decentralized insurance applications
What became of it
Completed · Medium confidence · Last verified 2026-10-17
As catalogued
An open protocol (Generic Insurance Framework, GIF) for building decentralised, smart-contract-based insurance products with automated parametric payouts.
2026 reality
Etherisc remains a small private company (PitchBook lists 11 employees in 2026) developing GIF V3 and parametric products. Its last blog update (May 2025) reported GIF V3 being scaled for more than one million policies with Chainlink Functions, a DIP-token staking bundle, and crop-insurance work in East and West Africa, including a production app for farmers in Zimbabwe with MyUbuntu and the Lemonade Crypto Climate Coalition. GitHub repositories (flight delay, farm insurance) were still updated in 2026.
The original protocol model remains substantially intact; the main application focus has become parametric crop microinsurance for smallholder farmers (with ACRE Africa in Kenya since 2020-2021, later on the Celo blockchain) alongside flight-delay cover.
one of the longest-lived decentralised insurance protocols, with real but small-scale deployments in agricultural microinsurance; DLT insurance remains a niche.
Third taxonomy
REVIEW · Confirmed continued activity via the Etherisc GitHub organisation (flightdelay-ui updated 2026-08-05, esusfarm 2026-04-13); no 2026 press coverage found. No claims changed; activity evidence remains thin, hence medium confidence.
