As catalogued
Berlin-based licensed digital non-life insurance carrier providing white-label, API-integrated insurance products that partners (brands, insurtechs, platforms) offered to their own customers.
2026 reality
Element Insurance AG is in insolvency. Insolvency proceedings opened on 1 March 2025 and most of its roughly 320,000 contracts (largely sold via partners) ended on 1 April 2025. As of July 2026, payouts to creditors, including undisputed claims, were still on hold while the administrator reviews registered claims.
After its main reinsurance contract was terminated and BaFin barred it from writing new business, Element filed for insolvency in December 2024. The carrier stopped operating; no buyer for the portfolio or business has been reported.
Heavy dependence on reinsurance capacity made the B2B2C carrier model fragile; losing its main reinsurer removed the capital backing for its in-force book.
Once one of the first European insurer-as-a-service carriers for embedded partners, Element is now a key cautionary case on capital and reinsurance dependence for that model.
Third taxonomy
REVIEW · Verified insolvency opening on 1 March 2025 and contract termination on 1 April 2025 (FMA notice), the 20 December 2024 over-indebtedness filing and July 2026 payout status (cash-online); replaced the unfetched Bundestag lobby-register PDF with Stiftung Warentest as the source for the ~320,000 contracts.
