Innovation intelligence brief
Added by the 2026 Swiss InsurTech research (issue #41) from public sources, not by the original academic study (Stoeckli, Dremel & Uebernickel). Its 2016 and 2017 classifications apply the original taxonomy definitions but were not validated by that study. All innovations in this cohort · Methodology ↗
Parametric weather cover that travel and leisure customers add at booking; Poncho monitors weather with high-resolution models and refunds automatically when predefined conditions are exceeded, with no claim to file.
Research profile · Swiss Innovation · 2021–2026
Classification notes · Market positioning 'mga' is an inference (Poncho prices and sells the weather guarantee while an unnamed partner insurer carries the risk); its regulatory role is not confirmed. Company-status 'independent' (founder-led, seed investor WeBuild Ventures). Strategic evolution 'expanded' rests on the company-reported 2025 launch in four further countries. 'api-driven' added because distribution via API/SDK/widgets is central per the company site.

Embedded, claim-free parametric weather refunds priced by location, date and activity for travel and leisure bookings.
2026 reality
Poncho's website (2026) offers the weather guarantee to travel and leisure businesses via API, SDKs and widgets and states that a partner insurer blocks the cover amount for each trip. According to its startup.ch profile it went live in France, Spain, Italy and Portugal in August 2025, and it was one of the Venture Leaders Fintech 2025 (London roadshow, November 2025). According to the founder (October 2025), the company had three employees and had secured an insurance company to carry the risk.
The original model is intact and was extended geographically from Switzerland to France, Spain, Italy and Portugal in 2025 (company-reported).
a Swiss early-stage example of embedded parametric weather cover for tourism, competing with larger international players (e.g. Sensible Weather, which supplies a ski-pass weather guarantee in Crans-Montana).
Third taxonomy
REVIEW · Resolved the researcher flags: official website found (useponcho.com) and HQ confirmed as Morges (VD) by the company site, Venturelab and startup.ch (the Zurich reference is the CEO's location). Dropped the EU-Startups source (HTTP 403). Corrected the Beinsure publication date (2 Feb 2026). Launch set to 2024-11 (Tech.eu) with the 1 Jan 2025 Swiss go-live noted; added incorporation (3 Oct 2024) and 2025 expansion milestones; strategic evolution changed to 'expanded' with geographic-expansion; added 'api-driven'. Kept REVIEWED because most facts are company-reported and the risk carrier is unnamed.
