Innovation intelligence brief
Added by the 2026 Swiss InsurTech research (issue #41) from public sources, not by the original academic study (Stoeckli, Dremel & Uebernickel). Its 2016 and 2017 classifications apply the original taxonomy definitions but were not validated by that study. All innovations in this cohort · Methodology ↗

Research profile · Swiss Innovation · 2021–2026
Classification notes · Company status 'independent' (was 'merged'): Well Gesundheit AG is a multi-shareholder joint venture not majority-owned by one operating company (cf. calibration record Sobrado). The merger with Compassana into Compassana-Well AG was announced on 24 August 2026 but takes effect only from 1 January 2027 and is pending regulatory approvals, so it is not yet a 2026 state. Strategic evolution 'retained' (was 'expanded'): new shareholders and a new insurer customer (KPT) are growth within the original open-platform model. Relevance 'moderate' (was 'high'): Well is one of two competing insurer-backed health platforms; the merged entity may become the reference point. Specificity 'pure-insurtech' follows calibration practice for dedicated insurer-backed digital health offers (cf. CSS myStep); the organisation is a digital-health company.

2026 reality
Active: well.ch (© Well Gesundheit AG 2026) offers a symptom checker, health assistant, appointment booking, e-prescriptions, a health dossier and support for app-based basic insurance models of CSS, Visana and KPT. Well reported more than 320,000 users in September 2024. On 24 August 2026 Well and Compassana announced their merger into Compassana-Well AG, to start operating on 1 January 2027 subject to regulatory approvals; existing services are to continue during a step-by-step integration.
Galenica and AEVIS Victoria joined as shareholders (June 2022); KPT launched its app-based basic insurance model KPT Win.Smart on Well (September 2024). A merger with the rival Compassana platform was announced in August 2026 and is not yet effective.
Well turned the insurer-owned health app into a shared, multi-insurer open platform; the announced merger with Compassana would create one platform backed by insurers covering about 70% of Swiss insured persons.
Third taxonomy
REVIEW · Merger announcement verified with the joint press release and Inside IT (dated 24 Aug 2026; Netzwoche 25 Aug); it is pending regulatory approvals and effective only from 2027-01-01, so company-status changed merged -> independent. Strategic evolution expanded -> retained; relevance high -> moderate. Added sources for the Galenica/AEVIS stakes (June 2022), well.ch 2026 observation, and dated the 2020 announcement (17 Nov 2020). Removed the unsourced 'later also Galenica' company-field claim by sourcing it.
