Allianz-founded B2B2X insurtech, co-owned by Microsoft, that was to sell Allianz's own core platform (Allianz Business System) on Azure as a configurable, partly open-sourced 'ABS Enterprise Edition' to other insurers, plus a marketplace of insurance software components.
2026 reality
Syncier GmbH (Unterföhring, Munich court HRB 234919) remains an active legal entity whose LEI record (updated April 2026) names Allianz SE as ultimate parent and shows accounts filed in April 2025; www.syncier.com did not resolve on 2026-10-17 and no active external offer was found. Versicherungsbote reported that Allianz abandoned the plan to sell ABS to other insurers and that Syncier would remain but no longer acquire new customers. The marketplace unit was sold to Munich Re as apinity in October 2022.
Versicherungsbote first reported that Allianz planned to bring co-shareholders into Syncier to win more insurers for ABS, then that the external ABS commercialisation was abandoned (reportedly due to lack of interest from other insurers; at most around ten insurers were said to use ABS). Syncier GmbH sold all shares of apinity GmbH (the former Syncier Marketplace unit) to Munich Re with effect from 4 October 2022. The ABS capability continues within the Allianz group rather than as a commercial product for the market.
selling an incumbent's in-house core system to competing insurers proved difficult to commercialise; Allianz refocused the platform on existing (largely internal) use and divested the separable API marketplace.
historically notable as one of the most ambitious attempts by a top-tier insurer to productise its core system with a hyperscaler; its legacy lives on mainly through apinity (Munich Re) and Allianz's internal ABS use.

REVIEW · Verified the apinity sale to Munich Re (100%, effective 2022-10-04) via Reinsurance News/Munich Startup/Gleiss Lutz coverage and the Versicherungsbote report (citing Süddeutsche Zeitung) that external ABS sales were abandoned with Syncier kept but taking no new clients. No factual changes; Microsoft stake and Syncier's residual activity remain open.
