Innovation intelligence brief
Added by the 2026 Swiss InsurTech research (issue #41) from public sources, not by the original academic study (Stoeckli, Dremel & Uebernickel). Its 2016 and 2017 classifications apply the original taxonomy definitions but were not validated by that study. All innovations in this cohort · Methodology ↗
Helvetia's digital assistant Clara answers customer questions on insurance, pensions and home ownership on the Helvetia Switzerland website using OpenAI GPT models that draw only on vetted Helvetia web content, without registration and around the clock, in German, French, Italian, English and other languages.
Research profile · Swiss Innovation · 2021–2026
Classification notes · Clara existed as a decision-tree chatbot since Helvetia's 2017 chatbot initiative (per Helvetia in Netzwoche, 2024); the record covers the 2023 GenAI relaunch as a significant in-window development. Specificity 'part-of-portfolio' because Clara is a service channel within Helvetia's insurance offering.
What became of it

At launch
Public live experiment (March 2023) putting a ChatGPT-based assistant in front of customers, replacing decision-tree answers with LLM answers drawn from vetted sources; Helvetia described itself as the first listed insurer worldwide to do so.
2026 reality
Clara went into standard operation on GPT-4 in November 2023; Helvetia expected over 150,000 chats in 2023, making Clara its most important self-service channel. In October 2024 Helvetia described the deployment as in a dynamic transition phase. In October 2026 the Helvetia Switzerland contact page (now Helvetia Baloise) still offers a chat with Clara.
Moved from a seven-month pilot (2023) to standard service on GPT-4 (November 2023); still offered in 2026. No later change verified.
early, transparent public GenAI pilot in Swiss insurance with academic evaluation; a reference case for customer-facing LLM use under the revised Swiss data protection act.
Third taxonomy
REVIEW · Added Helvetia's own media releases (30 Mar and 23 Nov 2023) as primary sources and a 2026 observation that Clara is still offered. Corrected the innovation-award bronze from 2024 to 2023 (HZ Insurance, 5 Dec 2023). Resolved the original Clara date (chatbot initiative from 2017). Replaced the HZ topic page with the article URL.
