Innovation intelligence brief
Innovation intelligence brief
Added by the 2026 Swiss InsurTech research (issue #41) from public sources, not by the original academic study (Stoeckli, Dremel & Uebernickel). Its 2016 and 2017 classifications apply the original taxonomy definitions but were not validated by that study. All innovations in this cohort · Methodology ↗
Switzerland's first fully integrated care organisation: the VIVA Health Plan, an FOPH-approved alternative basic-insurance model of Visana, gives members one organisation covering GP care with a personal 'navigateur de santé', prevention, hospital, rehabilitation and home care, financed by a flat fee per member ('full capitation'), with a premium discount against Visana's standard model.
Research profile · Swiss Innovation · 2021–2026
Classification notes · An integrated-care business-model innovation rather than a digital one; included as the most significant new basic-insurance model of the period. Technology left empty because no core technology is evidenced. Maturity 'experimental' because uptake (about 3,000 members in 2025) remains small despite regional expansion. The full-capitation financing is stated in the partners' 2023 press release.
What became of it

At launch
An insurer, a private hospital group and a canton jointly running a regional, fully integrated care organisation with its own basic-insurance model.
2026 reality
According to Blick (October 2025), VIVA had just over 3,000 members in the Jura arc and Ticino against an original first-year goal of 10,000, and its CEO claimed 10% healthcare-cost savings in the first year without giving details. In 2026 the VIVA site lists networks in the Jura arc (Réseau de l'Arc), Ticino/Mesolcina (Rete Sant'Anna) and the Mittelland (Aare-Netz around Zofingen, introduced 1 January 2026, and Bärn-Netz from 1 January 2027), with Visana as the insurer ('powered by Visana').
Expanded from the Jura arc (2024) to Ticino (2025), the Zofingen region (2026) and the city of Bern (announced for 2027); membership growth is slower than planned.
VIVA is the first Swiss attempt at an insurer-provider integrated care model in the Kaiser Permanente mould. Its low uptake shows how hard it is to change Swiss consumer behaviour in basic insurance.
Third taxonomy
REVIEW · Dropped the PwC source (HTTP 403, content not verifiable). Confirmed full-capitation financing from the primary press release (previously attributed to secondary reporting). Corrected milestone 2022-10 sources (PlattformJ and Moneycab, not the 2023 release). Added the 2026 Zofingen launch (Aare-Netz, 1 January 2026) and the Bärn-Netz 2027 listing from the VIVA and Swiss Medical Network sites; updated reality2026, evolution and targetCustomers. Normalised swissConnection type to 'headquarters'.
